Schools across Israel opened their doors Thursday morning, marking the end of summer vacation and beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

More than 180,000 educators returned to work Thursday, teaching the 2,232,172 Israeli children registered in schools and kindergartens across the country.

Some 159,000 students entered the Israeli elementary school system today, starting first grade. In addition, roughly 9,000 new teachers joined the Israeli public school system for this academic year.

The Education Ministry designated the theme of this school year as “The Unity of Jerusalem”, and will implement a number of programs promoted by Education Minister Naftali Bennett (Jewish Home).

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will join Bennett in a visit later on Thursday to the Tamra-Haemek school in the predominantly Arab town of Tamra in the Galilee region in northern Israel.

Education Ministry officials said no major strikes were anticipated in the foreseeable future, with a planned strike in the Druze sector averted last night, paving the way for the smooth opening of the new school year.
