Miri Regev, the Minister of Culture and Sport, wrote today (Sunday) to the Israel Football Association that "as an act of identification with the terrible tragedy which has hit Italy and the need to express the State of Israel's participation in the pain of the families and the Italian nation, I will request that a minute's silence be held at the mutual game which will be played next week in Israel".

Next week, Israel opens its qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup that is to take place in Russia, with the home game against Italy at the Sammy Ofer stadium in Haifa.

"Sport is a bridge between countries and nations and such a gesture is worthy and important and will set an example for the entire world," said Regev.

"I believe that solidarity in sport will bring people closer and I feel an obligation to promote this.I am convinced that the initiative will be adopted by the Israel Football Association and by FIFA," she added.
