At least 20 people are dead and dozens more wounded in a train crash in southern Italy.

The accident occurred when two trains running on the same track collided head-on between Corato and Andria.

The damage caused by the collision was so severe, the mayor of Corato said the accident looked like the scene of a plane crash.

"It looks like there has been a plane crash," said Massimo Mazzilli, mayor of Corato.

One witness who responded to the accident told the BBC it was "the worst scene of my life."

Rescue services are struggling recover survivors and transport them to hospitals in the area. The operation has been hampered by the location of the accident in a relatively remote area, far from major cities.

“The rescue is complicated because this happened in the middle of the countryside,” said Luca Cari, a fire department spokesperson.
