Public institutions in Umm Al-Fahm are closed Sunday, after residents decided to strike over two violent murders over the weekend.

25 year-old Mohammed Agbarieh and 27 year-old Hussein Mahajina were found shot dead in two different parts of the city Friday; both left behind young brides and both were due to be married within the next several weeks. The circumstances of both deaths remain under investigation.

The funerals for both men were held late Saturday night, with heavy police presence to prevent an uprising.

Umm al-Fahm residents are outraged.

'The Arab public is on the brink of civil war," Yousef Jabarin, a resident, stated to Army Radio. "People in this city have thousands of illegal weapons, and as long as we turn them against each other and not outsiders, the police don't do enough to catch those responsible and bring them to justice."

"If the weapons were used for terrorism, police would have gotten their hands on the perpetrators within hours," he added.

During an emergency meeting held Saturday in Umm al-Fahm in cooperation with the High Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel, the city agreed to shut down schools, public institutions, and businesses as a form of protests; city residents also plan to protest during a planned visit by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu next week.
