A police officer was seriously wounded on Sunday night by a car that ran him down at a junction in Nazareth, an Arab Israeli city in northern Israel.

The car fled the scene, and police are currently trying to clarify whether the hit-and-run was an accident or a car ramming attack conducted by an Arab terrorist.

The officer was treated by Magen David Adom (MDA) medical teams at the site before being evacuated to Rambam Hospital in Haifa for treatment.

Initial details of the incident indicate that the officer asked the driver to stop, but the driver ignored the orders and ran over the officer.

Large police forces are scouring the area for the offending driver.
