MK Amir Peretz (Zionist Union) confirmed on Thursday his future candidacy for leader of Labor party.

After informing students at Sapir College this week of his intention to run for chairman of the party in two years, Peretz verified the rumors, according to Channel 10.

"I do not deny that I se myself as someone who could," Peretz stated. "I already served in this position."

Peretz led the Labor party between 2005 and 2007 and left it in 2012 to join Tzipi Livni's Hatnua party. With the merger between Hatnua and Labor prior to elections in March 2015, he re-entered the Knesset as a member of Zionist Union.

The former minister clarified that until the next Labor primaries, he will aid the current Zionist Union chairman, Yitzhak Herzog, in cementing the party's position against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's coalition.

"Herzog is leading a complex opposition, perhaps the most complex we've ever add," Peretz noted, adding that "the question of [Labor] leadership is less important, but it is important the public feels there is a real ideological alternative on defense, economic and social issues."
