A 42 year-old Israeli man who worked on behalf of a construction company in Nigeria was killed Wednesday during a kidnapping attempt near the nation's capital Abuja. Local sources indicate that kidnapping attempts are considered relatively routine.

Witnesses said that four kidnappers came to the construction site, saw the Israeli first, and tried to kidnap him for ransom.

During the kidnapping attempt, one of the guards at the construction site tried to prevent the abduction and clashed with the kidnappers, along with an additional Israeli at the scene.

The Israeli managed to escape his would-be kidnappers, but was shot dead by one of his assailants as he made his getaway.

The guard suffered light injuries and the other Israeli at the scene escaped unharmed.

The Chabad emissary in Nigeria, Rabbi Yisrael Ozen, was notified of the tragedy and is arranging with the Foreign Ministries of Nigeria and Israel for the deceased's body to be transferred back to Israel. The man's family has been notified, although his official identity has not yet been released.
