Two people were killed and three people were seriously injured Monday afternoon during a stabbing attack at an IKEA store in the Swedish city of Vesteras, state media reported.

While an IKEA spokeswoman confirmed an attack had taken place, and that the Erikslund shopping center had been closed, she did not add details.

"We found a man and a woman who had knife injuries and who later died of their wounds," Vastmanland police said in a statement to Reuters.

One of three injured, a 35 year-old man; he has been rushed to surgery at Västmanland hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition has been downgraded from "serious" to "critical."

Police have cordoned off the area and are interviewing witnesses, local media said. The IKEA store has 44 CCTV cameras throughout the complex which may have caught footage of the attack

One suspect, a middle-aged man, has been arrested for murder.

"We do not have a motive at the moment," police spokesman Per Stromback said. All of the victims were known to each other and had been shopping together.

Vesteras, a city of about 140,000, is located about an hour west (120 km, or 74.5 miles) of Stockholm.

As of late Monday afternoon, police with bulletproof vests were still blocking off the store, according to The Local

Cynthia Blank contributed to this report.
