A woman from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was handed a death sentence on Monday for stabbing to death an American school teacher at an Abu Dhabi mall last year, Al Jazeera reports.

The murderer, Alaa Bader Abdullah Al Hashemi, was found guilty on charges of stabbing Ibolya Ryan to death last December 1 with a large knife in a bathroom stall at the Reem Island shopping mall.

In addition to the stabbing, the 30-year-old was charged with "creating a handmade bomb" that she placed in front of the home of an Egyptian-America doctor just hours within the stabbing attack. She was arrested within two days of the incidents.

Hashemi "was also found guilty of sending money to Al Qaeda in Yemen, knowing the funds would be used in terrorist acts," the local paper The National reported.

The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi sentenced her to death in Abu Dhabi, in a ruling that cannot be appealed. Her trial had been closed to international media.

Hashemi previously asked the court give her psychological help, claiming she was suffering a mental illness that caused her to have "unreal visions" and see "ghost-like people."

The court had her take psychiatric tests which it claimed showed she was aware of her actions.
