A security detail has been assigned to MK Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) due to threats against her on social networking sites.

Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein confirmed rumors that a detail had been assigned on Monday.

"We were stunned by the explicit threats made against MK Ayelet Shaked, in the form of photos of her in SS uniforms, and the Knesset Officer announced that she shall be secured," he said.

Edelstein noted that at this stage the responsibility for providing Shaked's security is the Knesset's, and that the same would apply to any minister. Shaked has been named as the incoming Justice Minister for the thirty-fourth government of Israel.

"You cannot threaten Knesset members, whatever their positions, and we will make sure that they can do their job properly," Edelstein emphasized.

The Left has been outraged over Shaked's appointment since the Justice Minister announcement last week, with some comments extending beyond simple political differences.

Former Shinui MK Yosef Paritzky, specifically, caused an uproar after making a series of sexist comments against Shaked. In a post on his Facebook page Paritzky wrote: "this is the first time in Israel the justice minister can star on the calendars that hang in garages," and later compared Shaked to a "woman of the Third Reich," i.e. dangerous but beautiful.

The statements stirred a rare defense of Shaked from the far-left Meretz party, with MK Michal Rozin rushing to defend Shaked against "chauvinistic comments" and a very public statement of support for her from political opponent Meretz Chairman Zehava Galon.
