Channel 10 News reported on Friday evening that Hatnua chairwoman Tzipi Livni and Labor chairman Yitzhak Herzog are very close to reaching an agreement under which they will run together in the next elections.

According to the report, the two have already agreed on several principals.

As part of the agreement being formulated, the second spot on the Labor party’s Knesset list will be reserved for Livni. Another place in the top ten on the list will be reserved for former minister Amir Peretz. Another possibility is that Kadima chairman Shaul Mofaz will join the agreement as well, in which case he too may be guaranteed a spot in the Labor party’s top ten list as well.

Channel 10 further noted, however, that it is not guaranteed that the agreement between Livni and Herzog would be accepted within the Labor party. Herzog would have to get permission from the Labor Central Committee to reserve spots for Livni and possibly for other Knesset members from Hatnua, a fact which is sure to anger other Labor MKs who could be left out of the Knesset.

Earlier Friday, it was reported that Herzog and Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid are competing to bring Livni into their parties in a bid to become the largest in the "center-left" bloc as it is being referred to. That report said that Livni is leaning towards Herzog.

According to a poll this week conducted by the Rafi Smith Institute for Globes, if Livni and Herzog were to run together they could expect to get 24 seats and become the largest party, outstripping Likud by one mandate.
