The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday strongly condemned the recent intense fighting between Syrian government and opposition fighters in the Golan Heights and demanded an end to all military activity in the area, The Associated Press (AP) reports.

A resolution unanimously adopted by the council echoed Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's finding that ongoing military activities in the area of separation "have the potential to escalate tensions" between Israel and Syria, jeopardize the cease-fire between the two countries and pose a risk to civilians and UN personnel.

The resolution extends the UN mission monitoring the Israeli-Syrian cease-fire, which currently has about 1,250 troops, until December 31.

The resolution comes after tensions increased again in the Golan Heights this week, spilling over to the Israeli side.

On Sunday morning, an Israeli teenager was killed and several people were wounded after an explosive device was detonated near a passing vehicle.

Israel said that military forces loyal to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad were behind the cross-border attack, and struck nine targets belonging to the Syrian army in retaliation.

Syria said the strikes killed four soldiers and wounded nine, and on Monday urged the United Nations to condemn Israel's "flagrant violation" of its territory.

Earlier this month, Syrian rebels shot at an IDF post near Mount Hermon; no one was hurt. In early March, two rockets landed also near an IDF post in Mount Hermon. No injuries or damage were reported in that incident.
