A young Arab man attacked a Jewish man on Sunday near the Shechem Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. The attacker fled the scene, and the victim did not require medical care.

The victim was a hareidi-religious man dressed in traditional hareidi garb, giving rise to suspicions that the attack was a terrorist incident, and that he was targeted due solely to his clearly Jewish appearance.

Police searched the area and arrested one suspect, who has been taken in for questioning.

Earlier this year, a hareidi man was stabbed in the chest and back by two Arab men in the same area and suffered moderate injuries. In January, a video showed dozens of Arab youth harassing two young hareidi-religious men near Shechem Gate.

There have been serious attacks elsewhere in the city as well, including near-daily assaults in Abu Tor and near Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus.

The latest attack came just hours after Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat revealed that there has been a major increase in Arab-on-Jewish attacks in the capital.
