Tens of thousands of hareidi Jews took part Thursday in a Jerusalem protest against plans to enlist hareidi men into the military.

The multitudes gathered next to the IDF's Jerusalem enlistment center, where security was beefed up to prevent any attempt by the protesters to break in.

Heads of the Eida Hareidit, which organized the protest, spoke against Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Economics Minister Naftali Bennett, whom they accused of promulgating "harsh decrees" against the hareidim.

Police said that the demonstrators attacked policemen, set garbage bins on fire and threw rocks.

Most of the hareidi public did not take part in the protest because leaders like Rabbi Steinman, the Belzer Rebbe and the Gerrer Rebbe, currently favor quiet dialogue with the authorities over open confrontation.
