Thousands of people took part in the yarzeit memorial ceremony for the Rishon LeTzion Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu at Har Hamenuchot in Jerusalem Thursday. Two years have passed since the death of the venerated sage, who served as Israel's Chief Sephardic Rabbi.

The Rabbi's son, Rabbi of Tzfat Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, called on the gathered people to pray for the release of Jonathan Pollard, whom his father loved very much. Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu met with Pollard several times and the two had a close relationship.

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu also made use of the occasion to deliver an attack on the planners of the expulsion of 30 families from Givat HaUlpana. "We will pray for the Land of Israel," he said. "For every place that the wicked ones want to evict, we will pray that their counsel shall not be heeded and their thoughts shall fail."
