Captain Ezra Lakia, who was seriously wounded Tuesday in a Lebanese Army sniper ambush, received a Divisional Commander Citation from the Commander of Division 162 in 2002, for an act of bravery during Operation Defensive Shield.

On Tuesday, July 23, 2002 (14 Av 5762), a platoon from Haruv Battalion was sent to look for terrorists, one week after a horrific terror attack on a passenger bus near Emanuel that killed nine.  Then-Lieutenant Lakia commanded the force.

Two terrorists were waiting in ambush, and when the soldiers were 50 meters away from them, they opened fire. Lt. Lakia gave an order to open fire and then charged at the two terrorists himself, killing them both.

He received the Divisional Commander Citation for professionalism, leadership and courage.
