Speaking at the consecration of a new synagogue in the Maale Hazeitim neighborhood of Jerusalem, Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef attacked the Yamina party as well as Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Matan Kahana for their attacks on Jewish practice.

"I have close ties to your community," Rabbi Yosef said, "but there is a small minority of extremists that wants to make reforms in the area of kosher supervision, in conversions, flouting Jewish law. I need your support in order to protect and strengthen the Chief Rabbinate."
