US ambassador to Israel, Tom Nides confirmed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Alqeh, shot to death during fighting in Jenin today, was an American citizen.
Nides called for an "extensive inquiry" into the journalist's death.
"Very sad to learn of the death of American and Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh of Al Jazeera," tweeted Nides. "I encourage a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her death and the injury of at least one other journalist today in Jenin."
Israeli sources said Abu Alqeh was likely shot by Arab gunmen during the shootout with IDF forces.
