The head of the Beit El council, Shai Alon, responded to sentiments published by former Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein. In his book, Weinstein said he had regrets following the decision to destroy the Ulpana neighborhood in Beit El, because only after the decision did he tour the site and realize that it would have been better left intact.

"History will remember poorly those who have degraded the status of the State of Israel's legal system to the lowest ebb. The all-powerful attorney general does not bother at all to go down to the people and see with his own eyes which houses he is destroying and for what. Time and time again, the misery is revealed in the conduct of senior jurists in Israel who have gained the status of saints in the Israeli public. Time to bust that myth," Alon said.
