Inspectors from the Ministry of Defense's Border Crossing Authority recently thwarted an attempt to smuggle an M16 rifle into Israeli territory.
An Israeli car driver, a resident of Wadi Ara, who arrived while traveling from the Palestinian side of the crossing, near Tulkarm, aroused the suspicion of the inspectors. Investigators ordered him to stop, but the suspect tried to escape. His car struck a set of road spikes, and he was arrested. A search of his car turned up an M16 and ammunition hidden in a bag.
The suspect was detained and taken for questioning by security officials.
