Investigators have concluded that Chinese hospitals continue cutting off human organs prior to patients' being declared dead, violating internationally-recognized medical ethics.
An article from 2019 reported that an international tribunal concluded that organs from "more than 1.5 million" members of marginalized groups in Chinese prison camps were being harvested on a yearly basis.
According to the tribunal's findings, “Forced organ harvesting has been committed for years throughout China on a significant scale,” in an act of “unmatched wickedness" on par with the biggest crimes committed over the last century.
In 2014, Chinese state media said the country was "phasing out" the practice in favor of a system of national donations.
