The U.S. Department of Defense said it could not verify claims that the Russian army had taken control of the town of Irpin, about 200 miles from the capital city of Kyiv.
While Russian media claimed its army has wrested control of the area, the city's mayor said Ukrainian forces had "liberated" the city from Russian troops.
