North Korea has conducted a missile test that landed landed 170 kilometers (106 miles) west of Cape Tappi on the northern tip of Japan, according to the country's vice defense minister Makoto Oniki.

Outgoing South Korean President Moon Jae-in condemned the missile launch, calling it a "violation of the ban on intercontinental ballistic missile testing."

Oniki said the missile flew to an altitude of 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles), suggesting it is a "new type of ICBM."

The US Defense Department confirmed that earlier tests by the North conducted on February 26 and March 4 were likely testing a new ICBM system.
