ANI/Sputnik reported that a shootout between Kyrzkystan and Tajik forces erupted at about 2:50am Friday morning at the border between the two central Asian states.

On March 10, officials from the two states held talks after an exchange of fire earlier in the day.

According to reports, Kyrgyz border guards said accused their Tajik counterparts of entering a disputed area to demand them to leave.

Local residents said one Tajik guard was killed and a civilian was wounded in the incident though no official details have been confirmed.

Tajikistan, for its part, said two civilians were killed and 10 wounded while Kyrgyz authorities claimed 12 of its nationals received serious injuries in the fighting and more than 24,200 residents evacuated from the area.

According to a report by Radio Free Europe, "almost half of the 970-kilometer-long Kyrgyz-Tajik border has yet to be demarcated, leading to frequent tension since the two states."
