The Knesset on Wednesday evening approved in a preliminary reading a bill proposed by MK Yomtob Kalfon (Yamina) which would deny funding from educational institutions that discriminate against students due to their ethnic background.
The bill provides the Ministry of Education with another tool for dealing with discrimination against Sephardim in haredi seminars.
Kalfon said that "every year we see hundreds of Sephardi girls who do not start the school year on time because they were not admitted to educational institutions - solely because of their ethnicity. The bill is intended to correct a great injustice that has lasted for many years."
