MK Moshe Tur-Paz (Yesh Atid)'s proposed amendment to the Rabbinate Law was approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation and is expected to reach the Knesset this week for a preliminary reading.
The law seeks to change the composition of the body that elects chief rabbis so that it includes a wider representation of the diversity that exists in Jewish-Israeli society, expands the conditions for electing a chief rabbi, and introduces full transparency in the selection process.
According to MK Tur-Paz: "This is another step on the way to restoring the Jewish public's trust in the religious establishment. Restoring the rabbinate to the people is another step in promoting inclusivity and embracing Judaism that will represent the diversity that exists in Israeli society. As we pledged, we came to promote change. "
