First-ever woman appointed as head of Religious Council

Religious Affairs Minister Matan Kahana has appointed Rivka Azriel to head the Binyamina Religious Council.

Azriel thus becomes the first-ever woman to be appointed by a Religious Affairs Minister to head a Religious Council, and the first woman who self-identifies as haredi to be appointed to such a position. Kahana is widely expected to appoint more women to similar positions in the future, especially as around a quarter of the approximately 200 candidates for such positions are women.
