The head of the Religious Zionism party, MK Bezalel Smotrich, has expressed his support for Chief Rabbi David Lau, who in a letter written to the Prime Minister, warned that he would not be able to sign off on any new conversions if his supervision of the process was curtailed.
"The Chief Rabbi is fighting the war against the destruction of the state conversion process and the severe damage to the unity of the Jewish People that could result," Smotrich said. "Attempts to present him as nothing more than a 'clerk' and call for his dismissal are extremely grave and reflect a complete lack of understanding of the role of the Chief Rabbinate. I wish to strengthen Rabbi Lau's hands in his entirely justified position and I promise that we will support him."
