About 5,000 cranes have died so far from avian flu in the Hula marshes, and another 30 have been found dead in the Jezreel Valley. The Hula Nature Reserve will remain closed until January.
Minister of Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg said during a tour of the reserve: "This is one of the most serious blows ever to Israel's wildlife."
