The chairman of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, MK Gilad Kariv (Labor), responded to the revelation of the conversion outline promoted by the Minister of Religions.
"Thanks to High Court rulings, there is no monopoly in the field of conversion in Israel. The condition for any further government legislation in this area is that it does not harm the recognized status of non-Orthodox converts. "
"The proposed outline deals with the conversion proceedings that take place within the framework of the Orthodox rabbinical establishment only. In view of the Chief Rabbinate's strict policy on this issue in recent decades, it is doubtful whether its continued control over the conversion courts will allow a real breakthrough."
