The Likud has stated that opposition leader Netanyahu opposes the law limiting the prime minister's term to eight years, even if the bill does not apply to him.

"Parliamentary democracies do not restrict the tenure of prime ministers but leave the decision to the public to choose who will continue to lead it every time," the Likud said.

'' For example, German citizens have repeatedly elected Chancellors Kohl and Merkel to 16-year terms, as have Canadian citizens who elected Pierre Trudeau to a 15-year term. No one thought that Canada and Germany were not exemplary democracies.
