Justice Minister Gideon Sa'ar has ordered his ministry's staff to prepare draft legislation that will limit the tenure of any prime minister to eight years.
The law will likely be voted on in the Knesset's next session, which commences after the Sukkot festival in another month. It will probably not be retroactively applied.
Commenting on his decision, Sa'ar said: "Promotion of this legislation appears in New Hope's platform and was included in the coalition agreements. Allowing people to remain in positions of power for extended periods of time results in a concentration of power and tends toward corruption, which is why this law must be incorporated into the country's Basic Laws."
