Following Belarus's diversion of a Ryanair flight and arrest of opposition journalist Roman Protasevich on May 23, the U.S. Department of Transportation imposed travel restrictions on the eastern European nation Tuesday.
The measure bars travel companies from offering tickets on flights between the two countries in a move that was first proposed in June of this year.
Since the arrest, dozens of sanctions have been placed on Belarus.
