A woman who refuses to accept a get (religious divorce) from her husband is to be fined NIS 1,250 per week until she agrees to abide by the ruling of the Beit Din ordering her to accept the divorce.

Yeshiva World News reports that the fine was approved by Chief Rabbi David Lau as well as the President of the Supreme Court, Justice Esther Hayut.

The couple in question have both stated their desire to divorce, but the woman is refusing to accept a get until her husband capitulates to her financial demands. She has also taken her husband to secular court regarding financial and property issues.

Explaining his position, Rabbi Lau wrote: "Restrictions will be imposed on the woman who refuses to adhere to the Beit Din's rulings and accept a get from her husband ... The woman brought all the property disputes to the [secular] court so her refusal to divorce is not connected to the deliberations on her property claims."

Rabbi Lau added that extensive efforts to resolve the situation, including offering the woman financial incentives, all failed.
