Today marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Antonina Zhavinska, who hid hundreds of Jews from the Nazis in the Warsaw Zoo together with her husband, the zoo's director. The Jews were hidden in empty animal cages and in her home.
Jews who had escaped from the Warsaw ghetto were those who found refuge in the zoo.
