Attorney Itamar Ben Gvir, who is representing the 12-year-old boy who was assaulted by a senior police officer in Jerusalem a few months ago, has responded to the announcement that the officer is to be indicted.

The officer in question is no less than the Deputy Commissioner, Shimon Marciano, and the unprovoked two-stage assault was captured on video by onlookers.

"The fact that an indictment has been issued in this case is of course a positive development," Ben Gvir said, "but it's far from enough. During the past year, thousands of pictures and hundreds of video clips showing violence committed by police have been sent to the Police Investigatory Department, but the number of indictments issued can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

"The PID is no longer a department for investigating police behavior - rather, it has become a department for defending and justifying police behavior, and occasionally throws the public a few crumbs in order to avoid the harsh criticism that the department is deserving of."
