Large public gatherings on the first night of Hanukkah took place tonight in Shanghai. The coronavirus has been successfully controlled in China to the benefit of the Jewish community at Hanukkah time.
2,000 Jews live in Shanghai but they are spread throughout the city and three Chabad Houses have been established to accommodate them.
Tonight, 250 Jews gathered to light the first Hanukkah candle in the historic Shanghai synagogue of Ohel Rachel. Israel's ambassador to China and general consul in Shanghai were present for the event.
