Sadiq al-Mahdi who was the last democratically elected leader of Sudan has died after being infected with the coronavirus. Al-Mahdi was virulently opposed to recent contacts between the governments of Sudan and Israel.
The present Sudanese government hopes to benefit from Israel's expertise in agriculture, technology, and other sectors.
Al-Mahdi had referred to Israel as an "apartheid state."
