Speaking on Reshet Bet this morning, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz (Likud) sought to calm fears about what a Biden presidency could look like for Israel, if the Democratic contender eventually clinches the election.
"In the past we have always managed to work with whoever was President, regardless of which party he came from," Steinitz said. "Our strategic partnership with the United States is not dependent on who occupies the White House - it goes beyond partisan considerations. Netanyahu and Obama, for instance, signed an agreement that gave Israel $30 billion in security assistance. Admittedly, they did clash over the issue of Iran," he added.
Asked to comment on the decision of Israel Police to question MK Miki Zohar over suspicions that he made threats against the Attorney-General, Steinitz said that it was "extremely unfortunate that certain unfortunate statements made by Zohar have led to such a situation. It does nothing to increase public confidence in the State Prosecution service. Even if they are frustrated and angry [at Zohar], using such methods against a public servant is an extreme overreaction. This should not have happened."
