The Likud party has submitted its response to the Supreme Court regarding a petition requesting the annulment of the position of Alternate Prime Minister.
The party stated that: "The Supreme Court has no authority to intervene regarding Basic Laws that were passed in the Knesset. The Supreme Court has an important role to play in Israeli democracy, but it is also subject to the rule of law. It is the Basic Laws that assign the Supreme Court its authority, and not the other way around."
The statement added that: "Interfering with Basic Laws under the guise of 'protecting basic principles' leads to a transformation of democracy into absolutism and such behavior is without precedent in the Western world. The Likud rejects all such undemocratic concepts."
