Moderna trials vaccine on older adults with encouraging findings

A safety study of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine candidate conducted on older adults has shown that it produced virus-neutralizing antibodies at levels similar to those seen in younger adults, with side effects roughly equal to those suffered due to high-dose flu shots, Reuters reports.

The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and was part of Moderna's Phase I clinical trials. Moderna is already testing a higher dose in a large Phase III trial, the final stage before seeking emergency authorization or approval.

Side effects (including headache, fatigue, body aches, chills, and injection site pain) were mainly mild to moderate although two volunteers suffered severe reactions. One developed high fever; the other developed severe fatigue.
