Videos and social media posts from the Chinese city of Xinjiang appear to show extremely harsh measures taken by Chinese authorities in order to enforce what has extended to a month-long lockdown, The Guardian reports.

Many internet users claimed to have been handcuffed to buildings in order to prevent them from leaving; at least one wrote that he was detained in a quarantine center for two months. Videos posted online appear to show residents screaming in frustration from the windows of their apartments.

Xinjiang saw a cluster of coronavirus cases emerge last month, but the number of cases has already begun to drop there.
