Despite a steep rise in the number of new coronavirus infections, the Italian government is reportedly not considering a new lockdown, The Guardian reports.
Yesterday, 1,071 fresh diagnoses were confirmed, the first time the daily increase has topped 1,000 since May.
Nonetheless, Health Minister Roberto Speranza told the La Stampa newspaper that, "We will not have a new lockdown," explaining that the epidemic is still considered relatively under control.
“I am optimistic, although prudent," he added. "Our national health service has become much stronger.”
He also noted that Italy has doubled the number of beds in intensive care units in the past few months.
