Official figures from the Iranian government reveal that over 20,000 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus pandemic since its outbreak, The Guardian reports.
This is the highest official death toll in the Middle East, some estimates (including those made by Iranian researchers) suggest that the true death toll is far higher, maybe even double this figure, due to the fact that widespread testing has not been implemented, even for those experiencing breathing difficulties prior to their demise.
