Al Mayadeen quoted the customs official of Beirut's port, who claimed that the material which caused the explosion was nitrate. Others claimed that it was an ammonia stockpile.
Al Mayadeen also reported that a "strange smell" spread across the port, and that civilians were requested to evacuate the area due to concerns of a dangerous chemical leak.
