The UK government has decided to remove Spain from its list of "safe countries" and require all citizens returning from the popular Mediterranean holiday destination to enter a two-week quarantine.
The Guardian notes that 12% of Spain's GDP is derived from tourism, and that the move will deal a heavy blow to the tourist industry, already struggling.
Other countries have acted similarly: France has issued an advisory against traveling to the Spanish region of Catalonia, and Belgium has banned non-essential travel to some Spanish regions and advised against travel to others.
Spain was one of the countries most severely impacted by the coronavirus epidemic, and new cases are still being diagnosed in large numbers.
