UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised to spend billions of pounds to rescue the economy, The Guardian reports, insisting that he will not make drastic cuts to the budget in order to cope with the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We are absolutely not going back to the austerity of ten years ago," Johnson said. "We want to build our way back to health ... We're building now very much a road to recovery ... focusing on infrastructure ... roads, broadband - the type of things that effectively help to create jobs but also provide services and economic growth and opportunity across the country."

Figures from May show that there are now 2.8 million people out of work and claiming benefits in the UK.
