The Health Ministry's committee for supervision of mohalim (experts in performing brit milah) is opening an investigation into the case of an infant who was hospitalized in the Bnai Zion hospital in Haifa after he developed an infection following his brit (circumcision).
"Metzitzah is an integral part of the mitzvah [commandment] and can be carried out directly by the mouth or via a tube," their statement reads, adding that it has long issued directives regarding hygiene surrounding the brit milah.
The mohel concerned has not carried out any other circumcisions since the brit milah in question.
Many halachic [Torah] authorities forbid the use of a tube or mouthpiece for the metzitzah process. It is extremely rare for complications to arise following brit milah at the hands of a competent mohel.
