Minister for Community Advancement MK Orly Levy-Abekasis has expressed her support for draft legislation for the legalization of cannabis. Early today, the Knesset's Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved two new bills relating to the decriminalization of cannabis and the regulation of its sale.
Levy-Abekasis stated that, "The draft regulation presented today deals only with a small portion of what will be necessary to do ... In order to pass new laws, extensive work will have to be done by various ministries. Among the preparatory work ... will be measures to prevent youth from obtaining the drug, measures to prevent addiction among youth, and provisions to ensure that the revenues reach the State's coffers from taxation. The government will also need to launch a program to explain to the public how to use the drug safely in order to prevent social damage."
