The AP reported that a Russian court convicted former U.S. marine and native of Michigan Paul Whelan of espionage, sentencing him to 16 years in prison.
The military contractor said he was set up and pleaded for American officials to intercede on his behalf. The U.S. embassy stated Whelan had been imprisoned for political purposes.
